The ZOMBRA sticker has ceased to exist. The aesthetic cleansing of the city, according to certain borough governments, is carried out with slabs of paint over urban expression, even over the crooked steel beam serving as a bumper on the corner where it remained for almost ten years. Ferocious traffic. The relentless rain of horns resounds like dozens of Roman trumpets in every direction,

against  the relentless synchronized timing of traffic lights and drivers accustomed to running them, and against the building where Burroughs killed his wife while playing William Tell. The trumpets attack incessantly; someone else runs the light. He was imprisoned in Lecumberri, released, extradited without any conviction in the last century. Gum! Gum! A cigarette, please! Gum! More ambient noise, less visual diversity, everything else remains the same.

The Churubusco River cuts through its vast expanse beneath thousands of automobiles. Its existence flows through tunnels beneath an avenue surrounded by streets and bridges. The roadway follows its course in its natural direction, and against that direction, from east to south along the median, a YEF bomb gradually comes into view. His most characteristic graffiti lettering for roughly two decades takes the pillar of the interchange as its canvas. Could it have been last night? It wasn’t there yesterday, or I don’t know. Every day it appears as you round the curve in the slowness of dense traffic. No one complains, no one is disturbed; it is customary here near Calzada de Tlalpan. Motorcyclists take advantage of the open space between lanes, just as the buried river does meters below. The YEF bomb is the protagonist of this crawl against the direction of the River, and also against the direction of what has been established. They haven’t erased it. It’s been there for more than seven months; I’ve seen it every day. Is it satanic? How long did it take? What time did he paint it? How did he do it? What for? Why? Who is he? Where is he from? What does he do in his spare time…? Graffiti. For that, dedication and time are necessary.

STATE / ON THE WAY TO CHUBURNÁ

This is how Pompeii might have looked; this is how Milan, Berlin, Paris, and other cities around the world look. Social demands written in spray paint across any available crevice of the city. Historic monuments become the primary targets when social demands are vast and unresolved, on other continents as in Mérida, Yucatán. That White City then fills with colors: those of femicide, pedophilia, fraud… In different tones and ranges of expression, multicolored slogans take possession of spaces through the right every inhabitant has to use public space, to use the city as a canvas. The aesthetics of graffiti and its vehement writing shout from the walls what others keep silent.

STATE / IT CAN BE DONE

Everything in the city seems to move at the same speed: automobiles, the Metrobús, pedestrians, the speed of a cosmopolitan city, always in motion, synchronized by colored lights, green or red, go or stop. Sometimes you can wait, stop moving when the red light tells you to. The flow of automobiles along Avenida Insurgentes stops, and so does the flow of pedestrians. It is then that, behind a hotel and another building, there lies a mass of concrete forgotten by capitalist society, an abandoned building. Forgotten by the airspace as well, in its apparent emptiness, imagined as a place exclusively

for birds and airplanes, there now rises, meters above the ground, the most daring calligraphic and artistic expression of the early century: aerial graffiti. Mexicans and foreigners climb abandoned buildings to decorate them by rappelling. Like an extreme sport, but artistic, the writers descend the sides of the building armed with liters of spray paint. Calligraphy, symbols, characters illustrate and decorate the faces of oblivion. WAYAK, PVC CREW, ARCHIE, CATHIELO, NOTA, NUTER, FIKOR, MERCH, FEASE, PLAGA, RUNEK, JAIBA. Green light.

Twenty-one floors on foot lead to seventy meters above street level. From there, the immensity of Mexico City comes into view, an enormous labyrinth of possibilities. In the distance, beyond the Coahuila building, you can make out the World Trade Center, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Communications Tower, the Torre Latinoamericana. In that same direction, but centuries earlier, we would find Mexico-Tenochtitlan, enclosed by a lake region bordered by hills and volcanoes, the hidden paradise of the Mexica, with its aqueducts and unmistakable neighborhoods, such as Tepito, which has preserved its name through the passage of time but is no longer the frontier of the city of Tlatelolco, from where that history can now be contemplated and recalled in seconds, from above.
